Distortion

Let’s make an old fashioned radio sound. So start by opening the file “Opera.wav”.

1. The first thing we need to do is clean the top and the bottom with a fade in/out envelope
   
2. Next we want to worsen the quality using … Edit > Convert Sample Type
   
3. Change the Sample Rate to 6000 and the Bit Depth to 8. This is really a drastic change.
   
4. Play the file and notice the worse quality and added background noise. I would like some clicks and pops though. We can add this naturally by applying some slight distortion … Effects > Special > Distortion
   

5. Use the preset “Pick Skraper”
   
6. Hit OK. Close your eyes. And pretend you’re sitting in front of an old timey radio at your great grandma’s house.
