Introduction
Believe it or not, while we’ve covered the bread and butter of what sound design in QLab might entail, we’ve really only just scratched the surface of what we can do.
Back in the day we used to use CDs, Tape Decks, even Reel to Reel players to play audio in live performances. I remember the first time, after starting to use programs like QLab, that a director of a play asked for a change then said “I’ll look forward to hearing that tomorrow.” And instead I said, “Give me five minutes”. This new world of playback software allowed us to create instantaneous changes. No more burning CDs or cutting tape.
This new world opened up new possibilities, new visions, new dreams. What if we could control speakers individually? What if we could apply and alter effects live? What if we could change rate and pitch over time?
Well, now we can. And that’s some of the stuff this chapter is all about.
